Legends of Fear is Again New England’s #1 Halloween Attraction (5 stars PLUS)

Legends of Fear is again the best Halloween attraction in New England! It’s a spooky hayride and forest trail at Fairview Tree Farm, a family farm in Western Connecticut. Make it a day trip or weekend trip to Connecticut and take in other Connecticut attractions such as the Mark Twain House. I also called Legends of Fear best in New England in 2021 and 2025.

Just the hayride is impressive. At 30 minutes, it is the longest haunted hayride in New England. Rolling through a forest at nighttime is peaceful and magical, and naturally spooky. Every couple of minutes you encounter a raised stage on both left and right sides — raised so that everyone in the hayride can see it clearly. Some short scene plays out on the stage, and all with microphones for good projection and special effects. Often actors in scary costumes come up into the hayride to taunt the visitors.

It’s great. You’ll see tall fire effects, and a “laser lake”, which is a laser sweeping horizontally through fog to create the appearance of a glowing green “surface”. You won’t find that anywhere else in New England on a hayride. You’ll see floating bubbles with fog in them, and a “laser vortex”, a spiraling laser in fog that looks like a cone of light.

Even more impressive are the giant projections. Legends of Fear has mastered this technique, which you won’t see anywhere else in New England. Let’s say that you have a giant set in the forest, such as a plywood shape that’s supposed to be the front of a spooky house. You can paint it… or you can project a scene onto it and that scene can then be animated, for example with ghosts floating around! It’s stunning, and they use giant project mapping in at least a dozen places.

Legends of Fear also has a 35-minute forest trail. They’ve done an excellent job getting rid of tripping hazards like rocks on the forest path. (Although some buildings along the trail make you step down an inch of two in the dark, a stumbling hazard, which I also noted in my 2025 review.) You’ll find a haunted camp, a giant dollhouse, evil clowns, a haunted church with spooky nuns, a haunted hospital with spooky doctors, and so much more. It’s extensive.

Then you pop out to a midway, a small carnival space. I love this innovation. It gives you a place to hang out with your friends and extend your time. There’s a fire pit to warm your hands, with food vendors, drinks, and gift shops.

Legends of Fear! It’s so big, so extensive, and so atmospheric. Each setting on the hayride or forest was tailored to the different themes, with 5-6 actors. You’ll see very professional, polished attractions, with a theme park level of immersion. The costumes, the makeup, and the actors were good, with real scenes to act out, not just jumping out to startle you. They’ve paid a lot of attention to detail. You’ve got to see Legends of Fear.
