The Week in Weird | ||||
Inception – free movie preview tickets | 7/13 | Boston Metro |
TONIGHT! I’ve got free tickets that you would have heard about on Friday if only you were on the Facebook fan page. Go to http://www.facebook.com/bostoneventsinsider and click “Like” and then suggest the link to all your friends. Note: the film is at 7pm, but arrive by 5:30pm. AMC Boston Common Theater, Boston, MA. Share more |
Cirque du Soleil – OVO – Free ticket | 7/21 – 8/15 | Boston Metro |
I have one free ticket for someone to come with me to the press night for Cirque du Soleil, the circus where acrobats and silk dancing meet strange surrealism and French Canadians. Big Top at Fan Pier, Boston, MA. Share more |
Forest Hills Lantern Festival | 7/15 | Boston Metro |
The event of the week is the Forest Hills Lantern Festival. It’s simply amazing, one of my favorite events of the year. You write a message or japanese character on rice paper, wrap it around a wooden float with a candle, and they all get floated on a lake as the sun sets and music plays in this cemetery. 6-9pm. Rain date: 7 days later. Forest Hills Cemetery, Boston, MA.617-524-0128. Share more |
Revere Beach Sand Sculpting Festival | 7/15 – 7/18 | Boston Metro |
Also not to be missed is this beach festival I’ve been to three times! Professionals come to make enormous sand sculptures, Wed-Sat, with sculpting lessons and vendors and live music Fri-Sun, and fireworks Saturday night! Revere Beach, 1 Beach Street, Revere, MA. Share more |
Glasgow Lands Scottish Festival | 7/17 | Western Mass |
Also the event of the week! I’m a big fan of Scottish festivals — so much energy and crazy competitions like throwing stones and hammers. 9am-9:30pm. Rain or shine. Look Park, 300 North Main St., Northampton, MA.413-862-8095. Share more |
Blackstone Valley Celtic Festival | 7/17 | Worcester |
The Irish have their priorities straight. Religion takes a back seat to parades, music, and dance at this festival! They only have one live music stage, but you can see a blacksmith demo, a raptor & reptile exhibit (sounds like a dangerous thing to combine), and a men in kilts contest. Indian Ranch, 200 Gore Rd, Webster, MA.508-943-3871. Share more |
South County Hot Air Balloon Festival | 7/16 – 7/18 | Rhode Island |
I have never been to a balloon festival. Someone with a car take me to this fesival! Fireworks, petting zoo, pony rides, and call in advance to reserve your balloon ride. Rt 95S to ex 9. Rt 4S, 10.4mi joins Rt 1, then Rt 138W. 3 Keaney Road, Kingston, RI. Share more |
Newport Black Ships Festival | 7/15 – 7/18 | Rhode Island |

While you’re in Rhode Island, check out this totally unique Japanese festival, including drumming performance, sailing ships, anime costumes, kite making, and a pirate performance by the Rhode Island Pirate Players! Various locations, Newport, RI.401-846-2720. Share more |
Fully Committed — Free ticket | 7/15 – 8/15 | Boston Metro |
At the bottom of this blog, I maintain the largest list of outdoor theatre in New England! I track 40 summer series, and I have one free ticket for someone to come with me to see the press night of Fully Committed this Saturday evening. It’s a hilarious play where one actor plays about 50 roles! I’ve seen the play before and it’s a must see. And they’re doing an outdoor BBQ as well. Publick Theatre, Boston, MA. Share more |
Shrekfest | 7/17 | Boston Metro
I also write about more outdoor movies than anyone, following 50 summer series! This one in JP features free ice cream for the first 100 attendees, flickering lanterns, and two Shrek movies (1 and 2) back to back. See below for a bunch more. 18 Nira Avenue, Jamaica Plain, MA. Share more |
Green River Festival (Balloon Festival) | 7/17 – 7/18 | Northwest Mass |
Here’s another balloon festival! Off Rt 91 exit 26. Three live music stages but no fireworks. Someone with a car come get me and we’ll go see BOTH!! :). Greenfield Community College, Greenfield, MA.413-773-9393. Share more |
Somerville ArtBeat | 7/16 – 7/17 | Boston Metro |
Also also the event of the week!! Somerville is having their annual art festival with over 100 arts booths and two performance stages. This will also include a pirate performance, storytelling, costume making, and a pirate parade! (But no pillaging and burning of villages.) They’ll also have silk dancers. The easiest way to annoy silk dancers who aren’t in Cirque du Soleil is to immediately say upon meeting them, “Oh! Like Cirque du Soleil, right?”. So, don’t do that. :). Davis Square, Somerville, MA.617 625 6600. Share more |
Banditos Misteriosos Scavenger Hunt | 7/17 | Boston Metro
Misteriosos continues to hide the locations of their events, but they have some truly creative concepts and I’m sure this one’s good too. It’s a kind of clue hunt / scavenger hunt. 1-2pm. Register beforehand. Boston, MA. Share more |
African Festival of Boston | 7/17 | Boston Metro |
This one’s new. But will it be any good? Sure, they’ll have live music and the ubiquitous vendors and food. But the parade at 10am from Boston Common is the real draw. 9am-9pm. Boston City Hall Plaza, Boston, MA.857-249-3831. Share more |
Festival Betances (Latino Festival) | 7/16 – 7/18 | Boston Metro |
I would tend to choose this one (if I had to choose). It’s the oldest Latino festival in New England. It’s free. A procession at 6pm on Friday, and last year they had a greased pole contest which they imply will be repeated this year. Villa Victoria, South End?, Boston, MA. Share more |
American Independence Festival | 7/17 | New Hampshire |
The 4th of July is not quite over yet! You can meet George Washington and other re-enacted historical figures. They’ll have a parade, old timey music and cannon firing, and “colonial games”. 1 Governors Lane, Exeter, NH.603-772-2622. Share more |

They’ll have live music, including an American Idol finalist, and you can get your kids fingerprinted, which I guess is a good thing? ||||
Bang on a Can Summer Music Festival & Mass MOCA | 7/14 – 7/31 | Western Mass |

This is basically a music festival. And I don’t think you get to bang on cans. Why o why do they tempt us with this title and then not supply cans to bang on! Oh the cruelty! 87 Marshall St, North Adams, MA.413-662-2111-. Share more |

Weekends only. 11am-6:30pm. Rain or shine. Schreiber’s Farm, 648 Quaker Farms Road, Oxford, CT. Share more |
Celebrate East Lyme Festival & Sandcastle Competition | 7/17 | Connecticut |
Also in Connecticut, these sand sculptures are only a 2 hour drive from Boston. Although the sculpting seems to be strictly for amateurs — no amazing professional stuff here — the fest seems bigger than Revere because they include a carnival, dunk tank, a car show, raft races, horse rides, a mini-golf course, a rock climbing wall, and a diamond dig. (Wait… what? A diamond dig? With real diamonds?? WTF?) Oh, and fireworks! East Lyme, CT. Share more |
