The Week in Weird |
Boston Massacre Re-enactment | 3/6 | Boston Metro
The event of the week is the re-enactment of the Boston Massacre. It’s the historical event that got the British fighting with the American colonists before the War of Indepdendence. Sat 11am & 2pm little kids re-enact the massacre in a strange combination of cute and horrid. 11:30 & 2:30 Trial of the Century w/ John Adams. Then 7pm Boston Massacre re-enactment. And it’s free! Old State House, Boston, Boston, MA.617-720-1713 x27. more |
Rail-A-Rama XL Train Show | 3/7 | Southern Mass
Also, there will be a model train show! Sometimes I go to these things just to interact with hobbyists who have so much passion and energy. 10am-4pm. Free parking. $5. Christina’s Function Facility, Rt 1, Foxboro, MA.617-361-4445. more |
Free Tickets to “Brooklyn’s Finest | 3/4 | Boston Metro
TONIGHT! I’ve got free tickets for a screening of “Brooklyn’s Finest”, tonigiht at 7:30pm (but plan to arrive at least an hour early to get a seat). It’s an extremely high-rated thriller with Don Cheadle, Ethan Hawke, Richard Gere, and Wesley Snipes. Boston Common Theatre, Boston, MA. more |
Special Olympics Passion Plunge | 3/6 | Boston Metro
I am told that the Passion Plunge does NOT involve mentally challenged kids being encouraged to dive into freezing water. It’s a charity for the rest of us to help support them. That makes more sense. Also at Lake Quinnsigamond in Shrewsbury. Nantasket Beach, Hull, MA. more more |
Chinese New Year Banquet | 3/5 | Boston Metro
We’re not letting go of winter this week, or the Chinese New Year, which apparently continues, this time at the Boston Chinese Neighborhood Center, complete with a lion dance and food. Call immediately because they will sell out. 5:30pm reception and 7pm dinner. Empire Garden Restaurant, 690 Washington Street, Boston, MA.617-635-5129 x 1053. more |
St. Patrick’s Day Parade – Cape Cod | 3/6 | Cape Cod
Or speaking stretched out holidays, it’s not too soon to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day! The first parade of the season starts at 11am. Rt 28, West Dennis, MA.617 268-7955. more |
Oscars |
Oscar Gala @ Brattle Theatre | 3/7 | Boston Metro
Everyone’s excited about the Academy Awards, which you couldn’t get a seat to even if you did live in California. Please don’t be fooled by local bars that do nothing but put it on the television. That is not an event! I called King’s, for example, and they basically said they weren’t doing anything special, but, “um, well, we’ll have it on the TV!”. Instead, try going to a classy event like this live broadcast to the Brattle Theatre. Brattle Theatre, 40 Brattle St, Cambridge, MA.617-876-6837. more |
Oscar Night America @ Hard Rock Café | 3/7 | Boston Metro
Or this even more expensive fundraiser, which is $175, and only if you buy ’em today. But part of the Oscars is arriving in a tux and “being seen”, so it should cost a lot, right? The Langham Hotel, 250 Franklin Street, Boston, MA. more |
Oscars at CinemaSalem | 3/7 | North Shore
My bet would be on heading up to Salem, where tickets are only $25. 6-11pm. One East India Square, Salem MA.978 744-1400. more more |
RIIFF Providence Oscar Night America Celebration | 3/7 | Rhode Island
They say they’re “one of only 51 sanctioned Oscar parties”. Gee, what happens if you’re not sanctioned? 6:30pm. Veteran’s Memorial Auditorium Arts & Cultural Center, 1 Avenue of the Arts, Providence, RI. more |
Oscar Night Hartford | 3/7 | Connecticut
This one’s for charity too. 7pm. Hartford, CT. more |
Also Fun |
Mass Audubon’s Maple Sugaring Festival | 3/10 | Southern Mass
But I would rather be eating maple syrup at this or any one of a number of events listed on the website. Moose Hill Wildlife Sanctuary, Sharon, MA. more |
Annual Mardi Gras Madness | 3/5 | Boston Metro
Nobody seems to care about Mardi Gras, as I discover each year when I research it. Basically, a lot of bars will run throwaway events with no creativity. However, this one looks like it’s worth a shot. It’s a benefit, so they charge $100. Does that come with free flashing or do I need to bring my own love beads? 7pm. Royal Sonesta Hotel, 40 Edwin Land Boulevard, Cambridge, MA. more |
Earth Rocks! Festival | 3/6 | Boston Metro
The Harvard Museum of Natural History is holding a day of lectures and “activities” (i.e. for children) celebrating geology. It’s a “family festival” which means you have to be a kid at heart to enjoy it, most likely. 9am-5pm. Harvard Natural History Museum, Cambridge, MA. more |
WinterQuest: In Search of the Snowy Owl | 3/6 | North Shore
What can I say. It’s winter. It’s slow. You could do worse than go on a guided tour tracking animals. 1-4pm. Castle Hill, Ipswich, MA.978.921.1944 x4005. more |
AAA Travel Marketplace | 3/5 – 3/7 | Southern Mass
I list this commercial “festival” because I’m curious what kind of deals are on offer. For AAA members. I wonder if I can get to Egypt for a week on $500. Anyone want to go to Egypt? Gillette Stadium, Foxborough, MA. more |
The Flower & Patio Outdoor Living Show | 3/5 – 3/7 | Worcester
This flower show might be worth checking out. I went to one once and it was surprisingly fun. It’s essentially a trade show for gardeners but they’ll have forced bloom flower displays, too! Park at Worcester Municipal Garage at 30 Worcester Center Blvd. DCU Center, Worcester, MA.508-792-0314. more |
Boston Underground Film Festival Launch Party | 3/9 | Boston Metro
The Boston Underground Film Festival doesn’t start for three weeks, but they’re showing trailers and giving out free food and beer and other stuff to build word-of-mouth. Woot! 6pm. Stuart Street Playhouse, 200 Stuart St, Boston, MA. more |
Performance |
Mortified Boston | 3/4 | Boston Metro
TONIGHT! Here’s a sort of weird live theatre, where everyday people share their most embarassing moments. I’ve seen it and it’s really funny! Highly recommended. 8pm. Motleys Comedy Club @ Trinity, 61 Chatham Street, Boston, MA. more |
Jerkus Circus | 3/5 | Boston Metro
This old-timey circus show features burlesque, comedy, and strange sideshow acts. I think I’ve seen it under a different name and it was eerie and wonderful! 10:30pm. Oberon, 2 Arrow Street, Cambridge, MA. more |
Echo Performing Arts Festival | 3/6 – 3/7 | Various
Some places have figured out that I’ll list anything if they call it a festival. I guess I am that stupid. There’s one group doing three music performances: in Salem on 3/6, in Boston on 3/7, and then Providence later on 3/7. Salem, Boston, Providence, Various.978-745-9500. more more more |
Charles River Dance Festival | 3/6 | Boston Metro
Also in the, “Why is this a festival?” category is this dance performance. Arsenal Center for the Arts, 321 Arsenal Street, Watertown, MA. more |
