Johnny’s List of Quirky Boston Events: 06/07/07

Hey-o,

Here’s this week’s list in fun activities.

TONIGHT! Jun 7. Catch the “best of” the The Boston 48 Hour Film Project. This was a project in which film directors must shoot and edit a short film in only two days. They have compiled the best into a one night show at the Coolidge Corner Theatre, Brookline, MA. http://www.48hourfilm.com/boston/

TODAY ONLY! This is the last day for the Scooper Bowl, the world’s largest ice cream festival. Today Jun 7, Thu 11:30-6. http://www.scooperbowl.org

The weird event of the week is the US Air Guitar Championships! That is tomorrow, June 8, at Harper’s Ferry in Boston. http://www.usairguitar.com/tickets.html

Runner-up would be the Boston Area Sport Kite Show. I’ve went a couple of years ago to this event and it’s a great opportunity to see stunt kiting. Really quite more impressive than it sounds. June 9-10, 9am-4pm. Millenium Park, 1205 VFW Pkwy, West Roxbury, MA. field “C”. Near Charles Park Rd. Address is approximate. http://www.seasidekites.com/local-events/info_10.html

Plenty of strangeness. I caught this one on a drive-by last year and I wish I’d stopped. It’s the Boston Dragon Boat Festival, 9-5pm. Yes, they have racing, but also music and dance performances, dragon drancing, Japanese drumming, arts and crafts, martial arts. Lovely! Charles River, near JFK Street and Memorial Drive, Cambridge, MA. 617-426-6500 x78. http://www.bostondragonboat.org

Also weird, the Bunker Hill Day Parade and Re-enactment. June 10. 12:30-2:30pm, Charlestown, MA. Begins at the intersection of Vine and Bunker Hill St. from the Tobin Bridge end of Bunker Hill St. Continues to Sullivan Sq. (Up BH St.) Proceeds onto Main St. After circling Monument Sq., Parade concludes on Winthrop St. by the Charlestown Militia Training Field. OK that is just the parade, but I swear there is supposed to be a re-enactment too. For info call 617-242-5652. Yes, it really is June 10, I am aware that Bunker Hill Day is actually June 17. http://www.nps.gov/bost/planyourvisit/events.htm

As part of Pride Week, alt.newengland is having a town common day, June 11. Amherst Town Common, Amherst, MA. Info tables, picnicking , an all day drum circle, and more. http://www.sismoon.com/pvrf.htm

This weekend is the Lowell Comedy Festival, and it looks surprisingly good! June 8-11, http://www.lowellcomedyfestival.com

The Newport International Film Festival is Jun 5-10, http://www.newportfilmfestival.com. A great excuse to visit Newport, RI.

This weekend is also the Coolidge Corner Arts Festival, June 9, Beacon Street at Harvard Street, Brookline. 617.739.9066. 10am-6pm. Basically, a lot of art vendors set up on the sidewalk. It’s fun to browse if you are in the area.

Speaking of commercial events disguised as festivals, The next JP First Thursday is tonight, June 7. Basically it is a gallery experience, a chance to walk around town and catch some art. Centre & South Streets,Jamaica Plain, MA. 6-8pm. May be live music, poetry readings.

Probably the least commercial, because it involves a real museum and a great park experience, is the DeCordova Museum’s Art in the Park Festival. I’ve been twice and it’s highly recommended! The DeCordova is a modern sculpture museum which is surrounded with a park. The park itself is dotted with sculptures so it’s a good place for a nice stroll or a picnic lunch. But on June 10, it will also have over 100 local artists vending their products. Um, I mean showcasing their art! 51 Sandy Pond Road, Lincoln, MA. 781/259-8355. 10am-5pm. http://www.decordova.org

Last week I recommended the Mendon Drive-In but didn’t give the website. It is Mendon Drive-In Theater, Mendon, MA, 35 Milford Street, Mendon, MA. 508 473-4958. http://www.mendondrivein.com

Boston Pride Week continues, with a celebration June 9th, and several other events, to June 10. http://www.bostonpride.org

Ongoing events I’ve mentioned before: Love’s Labour’s Lost to Jun 24, http://www.actorsshakespeareproject.org; Present Laughter, to Jun 17, http://www.huntingtontheatre.org; Light in the Piazza to Jun 9, http://www.broadwayinboston.com; String Beings (Snappy Dance Theatre) to Jun 10, http://www.worldmusic.org/

Too busy today for wisecracks. Have fun, see you next week!
