The Week in Weird | ||||
Free tix to Othello, The Other Guys, A-Team parody | 8/4 | Boston Metro |
Othello is already free, and it’s the outdoor theatre event of the year, taking place right on Boston Common (8pm). But as a press guy I have one guest pass for sitting right up front. Also, I have tickets to see The Other Guys, the new Will Ferrell comedy (7pm, but come early). Both on Wednesday! I also have free tickets (a onesie and a twosie) for A-Team, the parody at ImprovBoston this Friday. Also free movie preview tix for Takers on Sunday in Boston. Email me! Boston Common, Boston, MA. more |
Davis MegaMaze Opens & Magician Weekend | 8/5 – 8/8 | Worcester
The event of the week is that my favorite midsized amusement park is opening its corn maze! It’s the biggest and best outdoor maze in New England, with over 3 miles of pathways, and it’s across the street from apple picking, a petting zoo, a water spray park, hay rides, and they’re also having magicians come, apparently! 145 Redstone Hill, Sterling, MA.978-422-8888. more |
From Redcoats to Rebels: Military re-enactment at Sturbridge | 8/7 – 8/8 | Worcester |
Also the event of the week is this huge re-enactment of 300 years of military history at my favorite re-enactment museum. I’ve seen it and it’s HIGHLY recommended! They’ll have a parade, fife & drum, camp cooking, cannon demo, kids activities. Old Sturbridge Village, Sturbridge, MA.508-347-3362. more |
The Hitchcock Academy and 10th Mass Civil War Encampment | 8/7 – 8/8 | Worcester |

And while you’re there, check out the nearby Civil War re-enactment. Because when you think Massachusetts and history, you think Civil War! Heart-o-the-Mart, Rt 20, Brimfield, MA. more |
Bicycle Day at the Museum of Transportation | 8/8 | Boston Metro
The Museum that has so many car shows is having one for bicycles! Come see some real old-timers, and have breakfast and lunch on-site. 15 Newton Street, Brookline, MA.617-522-6547. more |
New England Haunter’s Gathering | 8/7 | New Hampshire |
If you like Halloween waaaaay too much, you have to start getting ready early. This convention is for people who run “haunts”, private homes for trick-or-treating that go all-out with special effects. I want to see the robotic gadgets! Unfortunately, if the website is any indication, it will be a low glitz event. Radisson Hotel, Nashua, NH. more |
Pittsfield NH Rotary Hot Air Balloon Rally | 8/6 – 8/8 | New Hampshire |
I really want to see this!! Just 1.7 hrs from Boston is a balloon festival, with fireworks on Saturday. Pittsfield, NH. more |
Marshfield Sandcastle Sculpture Contest | 8/7 | South Shore |
It’s sand sculpture season and here are three! The first is in Marshfield on the South Shore. They won’t have any pros but us amateurs can compete! 2-4:30pm. Rain date: next day. Rexhame Beach, Marshfield, MA.781-834-5543. more |
Sand Sculpture Contest at Marthas Vineyard | 8/3 – 8/4 | Southern Mass |
Of course, it can’t compete with Marthas Vinyard, but why is this contest midweek instead of the weekend? No professionals with big displays, but sure sounds fun! South Beach (right fork), Edgartown, MA.508-627-8134. more |
Crane Beach Sandblast! | 8/7 | North Shore |
And here’s one on the North Shore that I’ve been to three times… the first two were great but the third sort of a non-event. But Ipswich is so lovely to visit. Crane Beach, Ipswich, MA. more |
Salem Heritage Days | 8/7 – 8/15 | North Shore |

Lizzie Borden Museum Annual Re-enactment | 8/4 | Southeast Mass |
Entirely in the WTF category, the Lizzie Borden museum will “re-enact” the horrible murder (or maybe just the trial?) for which it is named. Who decided that murder is entertainment? Lizzie Borden B&B, 92 Second St., Fall River, MA.508-675-7333. more |
Rehoboth Agricultural Fair | 8/5 – 8/8 | Southeast Mass
But I think if I were in the area, I’d check out the agricultural fair in Rehoboth! I guess I was wrong to think my hometown is totally desolate, because I went last year and it was great! They have a petting zoo, live stock exhibits, tractor pulls, horse show, carnival rides, and demolition derby. Almeida Road, Rehoboth, MA. more |
Boston Urban Music Festival | 8/7 | Boston Metro
This is a music concert on City Hall Plaza, 4-6pm. It’s supposedly about urban unity. Hmm. City Hall Plaza, Boston, MA. more |
Summer Arts Fest | 8/7 | Boston Metro |
This arts fest is for “all ages” and it sounds like they mean it! By this I mean it’s not just for kids. They’ll have chalk art, group mural sketching, and “natural dying”. They mean dying t-shirts, right? Not, like, dying? Naturally? Menino Arts Center, Hyde Park, Boston, MA.617-698-1802 x213. more |
Get Mortified | 8/5 | Boston Metro |
Also in Boston, people get up on stage and recount their embarassing teenage stories for humorous affect. Not 100% winners, but a better laugh factor than your typical improv night, that’s for sure! I’ve seen it and recommend it. Mottleys Comedy Club, 61 Chatham Street, Boston, MA.877-548-3237. more |
Cambridge Discovery Days | 8/7 – 8/14 | Boston Metro |

They give free walking tours featuring famous dead poets, etc. and other locals. Various, Cambridge, MA. more |

Hiroshima Day | 8/6 | Boston Metro |
A day of mourning and remembrance doesn’t fit well on a get-out-and-have-fun calendar, but if we don’t occasionally remember it’s like hiding the past. This double-feature film event is worth attending, I’m sure. Japan Society, 420 Pond St., Boston MA. more |
Polyamory Boot Camp | 8/10 | Boston Metro |
The “toy” shop called Good Vibrations has a regular calendar on sexuality. Here’s one if you’re curious about experimenting outside monogamy. Good Vibrations, 308A Harvard St, Brookline, MA. more |

Waterville Valley isn’t really a town… it’s more like a giant resort based around skiing in the winter. In the summer, you go hiking instead and this weekend they’re celebrating with a Wild West theme, with costumes, live music, and “games”. So, is this a real event or more like a marketing angle? Waterville Valley, NH.603.236.469. more |

The Hound of the Baskervilles — a Comedy | 7/22 – 8/22 | Boston Metro |
I saw this Sherlock Holmes play last week and didn’t realize — it’s a comedy! It’s a hilarious parody of everyone’s favorite detective, with three actors playing about 12 roles. While there isn’t a very deep mystery to solve, the comedy and staging and accents are laugh-out-loud funny and this is HIGHLY recommended! 450 Massachusetts Ave, Cambridge, MA. more |
Cirque du Soleil | 7/21 – 8/29 | Boston Metro
I’ve also been to see Cirque du Soleil, and found this production much more accessible than the last one. The performers all pretend to be insects and you’ll find juggling, acrobatics, and clowns. About a third of the acts are mindblowing, which is more than enough to make the show! Big Top at Fan Pier, Boston, MA. more |
Fully Committed | 7/22 – 8/15 | Boston Metro |
