This weekend, definitely skip the Boston Gift Show, March 25-28, which I list mainly for people who’d rather shop than visit one of New England’s 1000 museums. It’s a retailers’ trade show and mall they create temporarily in a convention center. Boston Convention & Expo Center. (800) 272-SHOW |

Instead, how about going to see knights in shining armor bang swords together? It’s the SCA’s Mead Hall at the End of the World, March 25th in Arlington. It’s one of the large SCA events of the year, and so close to the city. Calvary Methodist Church, 300 Mass Ave, Arlington, MA. Feast at 2pm, dancing, crafts, performances, battles all in the medieval style. If you’re ever going to check out the Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA) and they re-creations of medeival combat and crafts, this would be a good chance. |

Also, oddly two different a capella competitions are occurring both on the same day. The Harmony Sweepstakes A Cappella Competitions, regionals, March 25th in Medford. Cohen Auditorium, Tufts University, 40 Talbot Avenue. Medford, MA. 617-627-3493. 7:30pm. |
|
But if I had to choose, I might pick the slightly more prestigious, The International Championship of Collegiate A Cappella – Semifinals, March 25th in Cambridge. Kresge Auditorium, MIT, 48 Massachusetts Avenue. Cambridge, MA. 8pm. The semi-finals for the biggest national competition. |
|
Also, check out Food – Skyline Sunday Brunch @ Museum of Science. Science Park, Boston, MA. (617) 723-2500. I’ve never tried it but it seems to be just the right combination of cultured and geeky. Sundays at 11am and 1pm. $24. Get an Omni theater ticket, too. |

Finally, I’ve figured out where to go for Origami — to Orimigado Studio – Walk-in Folding Night . 63 Wingate St. Haverhill, MA. 978-372-1215. $5. Thursdays and Fridays, 6-8 pm. Thursdays beginners, Fridays intermediate. Or call ahead to schedule your own hours with a group, for Origami & Paper Crafts. Paper Making – Pulp Painting or Sculpture. |
