Susie Essman, best known to audiences around the world for her F-Bomb laden lambastings of Larry David in her role as Susie Green on HBO’s “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” will be returning to the small screen again this fall, playing the mother of former “Friends” star David Schwimmer in a TV pilot called “Irreversible”. But her Boston fans need not wait that long and can see her this Friday night when she’ll be returning to her standup comedy roots at the Wilbur Theater.

We caught up with Susie during a break from shooting on the set of “Irreversible”.

Events Insider: Do you prefer film and TV work or do you still enjoy the standup life?

Susie: I like doing them both. I like being able to have different things to do. If I just did one or the other I’d just go crazy, so I like the different outlets. Right now I’m doing the show (“Irreversible”) and it’s really fun and I’m really enjoying it, but next Friday I’ll be onstage at the Wilbur. I love that stage. I’ve been on it a number of times and I’ll blow it out in a different way.

Events Insider: Do you think of yourself as standup who acts or as an actor who does standup?

Susie: I’m definitely a standup who acts. Standup was my first love and it’s been my bread and butter for 31 years. I think most people think of me the other way around, but standup was the thing that made me who I am. Acting is really easy compared to standup.

Events Insider: In what way?

Susie: It’s just easier. We didn’t have a script (on “Curb”) because it was mostly improvised. But you’re working with other people, you have an outline, and usually (when acting) you have a script and you know what to say. It’s a piece of cake compared to having to be onstage all by yourself and make people laugh every thirty seconds. Acting is what I do when I want to relax (laughs).

Events Insider: I imagine your comedy has evolved and changed over time. Where are you drawing your material from now?

Susie: I’ve always drawn from my life, and my life is constantly changing. I got married six years ago to a guy that has four teenagers, so I do a lot of stuff about raising four teenagers -since I was thrown into the fire on that one. And I have aging parents, and I’m aging and going through menopause, so whatever is going on in my life is fodder.

Events Insider: Do you still do older routines?

Susie: Whenever I’m doing my act, I never do it from beginning to end. I never know where I’m going to go, since I don’t have an order, I just go where it takes me. Sometimes I’ll be talking to somebody in the audience and it will remind me of an old bit, and I’ll go into it. And sometimes I’ll just make stuff up that’s brand new, so I never know where I’m going. I’m not that kind of a comic. I’m very spontaneous on stage.

Events Insider: How much of Susie Green is you?

Susie: Susie and I are not alike at all, except for the fact that we have a hard time dealing with bulls#*t. We both have really good crap detectors. But other than that we’re really different. She’s much more reactive than I am and she’s much more secure in who she is and what she does and says. I’m much more analytical than she is. I’m a comedian so I’m much more insecure than she is. She’s totally secure in who she is.

Events Insider: How has the role of the woman comic changed since you began your career? You and I both grew up watching Joan Rivers and Phyllis Diller for instance.

Suzie: When you and I were growing up, a female comic had very few role models. I think the visual has changed. There’s a lot more female comics out there than when I first started. And audiences are much more comfortable hearing women talk about racy subjects than they used to be.

Events Insider: Susie Green is such a part of your identity. Do you ever get tired of being recognized as her from ‘Curb’ when you’re out in public?

Susie: I never get tired of it. I loved doing the show. I got to go on that show – scream, yell, tell people to go F themselves, go home, get paid, and people love me for it – it’s amazing.

Events Insider (laughing): So it was kind of a dream job?

Susie: I never planned in my life that I was going to get paid for telling people to ‘Go F themselves’. It’s great. I love it.
