There’s a concert Saturday, and a parade Sunday at 12pm from Davis Square to Harvard Square, which is having an Octoberfest, with 6 live music stages, tons of street vendors, and a tethered hot air balloon ride. ||||

Rob Velella is a historic re-enactor who plays Poe, Hawthorne, and other literary figures. He’ll be giving a literary tour of Mt. Auburn that will be a cut above the cemetery’s regular tours. If you’re ever going to go on a literary tour, this is it. And it’s free. No, I don’t know what Parnassus means, but I know it rhymes with Molasses. ||||

Fall Festival at The Old Manse | Mon 10/11 | Metro West |
OK. Phew. A little too much weird. Let’s tone it down a notch. The Old Manse is one of New England’s finer historic homes and museums, and they’re having a festival with old-timey arts & crafts, music, and farm animals. They’ll have re-enactors tell stories about the life of real women during the Revolutionary War. The Old Manse, 269 Monument Street, Concord, MA.978-369-3909. more |

Mayflower II, Plymouth, MA.508-746-1622. more |

New Hampshire Fall Festival | Sat 10/9 | New Hampshire |
Up in New Hampshire is one of the re-enactment villages in New England, Strawbery Banke. (Like the folks at Plimoth Plantation, they can’t spell very well.) I’ve been and it’s worth seeing, but only if you’ll be doing something else in the area also. This week they’re having a harvest festival. Tons of demonstrations of sheep dogs, oxen teams, and historic manufacturing techniques. Marcy Street, Portsmouth, NH.603-422-7514. more |
Harvest Moon Fall Festival with Fireworks | Sat 10/9 | New Hampshire |

Halloween | ||||
Spiritways: A Night in Beseiged Salem Village | Sat 10/9 – Sun 10/31 | North Shore |
Salem is the place to go for Halloween, but you have to be selective. A lot of what’s offered is available year-round or too touristy and cheesy. This one’s a pick. A local college theatre group does a haunted village where you are led on a guided tour of the woods. I’ve been and it’s super spooky and theatrical, a real performance not just the unscripted improv of most haunted houses. A must see! And see all my other recommendations below in the Halloween attractions section. Pioneer Village, Salem, MA. more |
Salem Haunted Happenings Grand Parade | Thu 10/7 | North Shore |

Buy advance tix for Halloween Carnival at Heritage Museum & Gardens | Sun 10/10 – Sat 10/23 | Cape Cod |
If you live near Cape Code, buy tickets in advance for this carnival, which always sells out. (Although how a place with an art museum, an auto museum, tons of gardens and grounds can fill up is beyond me!). Heritage Museums & Gardens, 67 Grove St, Sandwich, MA.508-888-3300. more |

All taking place at a local roleplaying center and bookstore. Pandemonium Books, 4 Pleasant St., Cambridge, MA. more |
Fenway Cultural Festival (Opening Our Doors!) | Mon 10/11 | Boston Metro |

New England Fringe Festival | Thu 10/7 – Sun 10/10 | Boston Metro |
Arty but small, this ‘festival’ is a series of dance, theatre, and storytelling performances. I went once and it was creative but not well attended. Roxbury Center for the Arts at Hibernian Hall, 182 Dudley Street, Roxbury, MA.978-667-0550. more |
FirstWorksProv | Sat 9/25 – Sat 11/13 | Rhode Island |

Show Me the Science | Sat 10/9 | Boston Metro |
I’ve never been to a science fair on the assumption that there is only so much that a 10-year-old can entertain me or teach me about science. This science fair reverses the concept, with entries by adults to educate and entertain kids. 10am-12pm. Northeastern University, Curry Student Center Ballroom, 360 Huntington Ave, Boston, MA. more |

Discoverers’ Day Family Fest! | Mon 10/11 | North Shore |
Or this one, which features a nature ‘treasure’ hunt. I don’t just list all park events by the way — I’m very selective — it’s just that there are tons of them. Ravenswood Park, Gloucester, MA. more |
Monadnock Open Studios Art Tour | Sat 10/9 – Sun 10/10 | New Hampshire |
Although you’ll need a car to get around, this open studios tour reveals the private homes and professional studios of real artists you can talk with while considering buying their stuff, rather than just merchants. Throughout nearby towns, Jaffrey, NH.603-924-3886. more |
Warner Fall Foliage Festival | Fri 10/8 – Sun 10/10 | New Hampshire |
The look of this website is tiny, but actually, they have a pretty creative schedule, with a pie-eating contest, two parades, a woodman’s contest, and a ‘midway’ which must be a carnival, right? Warner, NH.603-456-9775. more |
Somersworth Pumpkin Festival | Sat 10/9 | New Hampshire | ||
This one looks pretty lame until you notice… they have a CATAPULT! And a bunch of other fun stuff, poorly marketed. Also, they only charge $10 for kids. Adults are FREE! I don’t think I’ve ever seen that before. Somersworth, NH. more |
Fall Festival & Carnival | Sat 10/9 | New Hampshire |
Waterville Valley is an entire “resort” town based on summer hiking and winter skiing. As an encapsulated for-profit community, their events will have higher polish but less local enthusiasm (crazy people who love their community running the event). This features an astronomy night, pie-eating contest, and other fun stuff. Waterville Valley, NH. more |
Southern New England Giant Pumpkin Championship | Sat 10/9 | Rhode Island |
How awesome is this: the farmers with the largest pumpkins compete! Unfortunately, there doesn’t seem to be live music or anything else going on besides the pumpkins, so I didn’t top-list it. Frerichs Farm, Warren, RI.401-245- 8245. more |
International Oktoberfest | Sat 10/9 – Mon 10/11 | Rhode Island |
Also in Rhode Island, here’s an event which features “German food, music, and culture”. And by culture they mean food and two stages of music. And by food they mean bratwurst and beer. Personally I’m always put-off by beer events, like all a festival needs to do to entertain you is get you drunk. Oh, and make sure to drive and bring your kids. Newport Yachting Center, Newport, RI. more |
Harvest Fest | Sat 10/9 | Boston Metro |
Somerville still isn’t Cambridge, but they do a good job trying. Unfortunately, it seems to focus around drinking and is 18+ (shouldn’t that be 21+?) — but they’ll have live music and aerial acrobats. Although they don’t say specifically, it appears to be indoors. 1-10pm. Armory, 191 Highland Ave, Somerville, MA. more |

Petting zoo, hay rides, pumpkin picking, canoeing, unspecified “crafts” and the ubiquitous face-painting. Bourne Farm, 6 North Falmouth Hwy, Falmouth, MA.508-548-8484. more |
Newburyport Fall Harvest Festival | Sun 10/10 – Mon 10/11 | North Shore |

Boston Palestine Film Festival | Fri 10/1 – Sun 10/10 | Boston Metro |
This film festival seems to truly be a festival, not just a series of screenings. It’s still not as cool as going to outdoor events, but they’ll have an opening reception and a few filmmakers appearing to present some of the showings. Various, Boston, MA. more |
Out of the Darkness | Sat 10/9 | Boston Metro |
They’re outdoorsy and for good causes, but I’m really tired of “walks” that are supposedly “events”. Is there a cookout? Music? I guess not. This is a charity walk to help suicide prevention. 9am-12pm. Artesani Park, Brighton, MA.617-877-1738. more |
