Odyssey Cruises Dinner Cruise – ticket giveaway | Boston Metro
Sat 1/1 – Sat 12/31 |
Everybody wanted those cruise tickets last week, so this week I have two pairs of tickets to give away, this time for a dinner cruise around Boston Harbor! Boston, MA. |
Chinatown August Moon Festival | Boston Metro
Sun 8/14 |
Chinatown is having a celebration where dancing dragons go door to door, sort of a trick or treat experience, leaving the street literally covered with firework casings and lettuce leaves! They’ll also have a stage with cute kids doing martial arts and dance. I’ve been and this is a must see! Highly recommended! Most likely 10am-5pm. Main Street, Chinatown, Boston, MA.617-350- 6303. |
Perseids Meteors | Metro West
Sat 8/13 |
The Perseids (August) and the Geminids (December) are the most reliable of the annual meteor showers. It’s unfortunate that the full moon will drown own the view but you’ll see plenty in the weeks before and after the peak on August 13. Get to a beach or a very large field with no streetlights to wash out the night sky. And here’s a park event where an astronomer will help you find them! Broadmoor, 280 Eliot Street, Natick, MA. |
Model Rocket Launch at Acton | Metro West
Sat 8/13 |
While you’re in the area, go see the model rocket launches! 10am-4pm. There’s another August 27 in Acton and also in Amesbury year ’round. School St. field, Acton, MA. |
Celebrate Revere | Boston Metro
Sat 8/13 |
This festival seems a little too “family fun” for me — face painting and magic and balloons for kids — but they end with live music and fireworks at 9pm! Revere Beach, Revere, MA. |
India Day – Festival & Concert | Boston Metro
Sun 8/14 |
I’ve been to this festival at the Hatch Shell on the Esplanade in Boston. They have performers and a huge crowd with dozens of booths. As the only South Asian-themed event I know of in Boston, it’s definitely worth a trip. Esplanade, Boston, MA. |
Boston Area Puzzle Hunt League | Boston Metro
Sat 8/13 |
A normal scavenger hunt is pretty tame — mainly tourist trivia and they end up sending you to restaurants and retail stores where they get a commission. However, this Puzzle Hunt has no sponsors and is meant for people who love puzzles. Teams choose whether to solve “normal” or “hard” puzzles. Unless you’ve heard of the MIT Mystery Hunt, choose “normal”. Harvard Square, Cambridge, MA. |
Carnival in Provincetown | Cape Cod
Sun 8/14 – Fri 8/19 |
You don’t speak the name of New England’s big gay carnival. You sing it, thusly, It’s time for CAAAAARN-I-VAAAAL!! This year features Charo, a parade, oh heck, the entire town is basically a parade for a week! All Over, Provincetown, MA.800-637-8696. |
Please help test my new events mobile app | Boston Metro
Fri 8/12 |
Have you heard that I’ve created a mobile app with events? I need volunteers with the iPhone and BlackBerry (okay, I’ll take more Droid, too) to test! Please email me at johnny@eventsINSIDER.com and volunteer! It will take just a couple of minutes to play around with it and will really help me out. Thanks! Cambridge, MA. |
MG Rover Day at Larz Anderson Auto Museum | Boston Metro
Sat 8/13 |
Boston’s wonderful auto museum has another lawn day, this time with MGs. 15 Newton Street, Brookline, MA.617-522-6547. |
Japanese Car & Motorcycle Day at Larz Anderson Auto Museum | Boston Metro
Sun 8/14 |
And the next day it’s motorcycles and japanese cars, an odd combination. 15 Newton Street, Brookline, MA.617-522-6547. |
Boston by Bike at Night | Boston Metro
Sat 8/20 |
Prefer your cycle without a motor? This architectural and historic tour starts at midnight and goes to dawn with a “pot luck” breakfast. Can’t you guys just go to a cafe for brunch? meet at 11:15pm. Bring something for breakfast Sunday in Christopher Columbus Park. Run by the Back Bay Midnight Pedalers. The website is old but I confirmed this by phone. Trinity Church, 206 Clarendon St., Boston, MA.617-522-0259. |
Model airplanes – CRRC Soar-In | Metro West
Sat 8/13 – Sun 8/14 |
This one’s even better, because it will have real runways, with model airplanes and helicopters! I’ve been and it’s a small event but great fun! Call Mark Drela at 617 253 0067, or drela@mit.edu. Lunch included in admission. Register ahead for discount. Directions, see http://www.charlesriverrc.org/fields_davis.htm. Davis Field, off Rt 117, Sudbury, MA.978-897-1750. |
Air Show at Pease Air Force Base | New Hampshire
Sat 8/13 – Sun 8/14 |
Of course, they’re completely outclassed by this air show with air stunts up above and lots of parked aircraft to see up close on the ground. Portsmouth, NH. |
Dominican Festival & Parade at Franklin Park | Boston Metro
Mon 8/15 |
There’s also a carnival at Franklin Park with Domican, Haitian, and Jamaican food, music, and dance. 12pm-7pm. Deval Patrick will march in the parade. Free. Ramsey Park, Boston, MA.617-201-2909. |
Free Folk Dancing with Folk Arts Center of New England | Boston Metro
Fri 8/12 – Fri 9/2 |
Aug 12, Aug 19, and Sep 2, you’ll find participatory folk dancing from 7:30-9:30 pm in Harvard Square. In front of Au Bon Pain, Forbes Plaza, 1350 Massachusetts Ave, Cambridge, MA.781-438-4389. |
Chiefly About War Matters | Metro West
Sat 8/13 |
I love re-enactments, and this one features New England author Nathaniel Hawthorne and other figures, who debate the American Revolutionary War. Appears to be two sessions, 1pm and 3pm. The Wayside, Concord, Concord, MA. |
National Poetry Slam | Boston Metro
Tue 8/9 – Sat 8/13 |
This year, the entire nation’s best poetry performers come to Boston! And yet I am only listing this event as #18 of the week. Oh well. I’ve seen poetry “slamming” and it’s a lot more interesting than you might think, like seeing a series of short one-person theatre shows. It features workshops, a Harry Potter vs Buffy the Vampire Slayer face-off, and an American Sign Language session. Various, Cambridge, MA. |
River Glow | Rhode Island
Sat 8/13 |
Taking the idea from Providence, the town of Westerly RI floats 30 bonfires in their river, and they’ll have belly dancing, steel drum bands, jugglers, and more. 7-10pm. Westerly, RI. |
Really Breaking the Mold: Unconventional Sculptural Processes | Western Mass
Sat 8/13 |
The sculptor who made the Lincoln Memorial had a home in Western Massachusetts that is now a museum and grounds. This weekend they’ll have workshops and demonstrations on sculpting! I’ve been and it’s a wonderful location, well worth the trip. 4 Williamsville Road, Stockbridge, MA.413.298.3579. |
Bolton Fair | Worcester
Thu 8/11 – Sun 8/14 |
Small and not arty, it’s yet another agricultural festival! But they’ll have a lumberjack contest and show, martial arts, trampolite show, dogs catching frisbees, and a “sheep agility” contest. Let’s just hope it’s the sheep who are demonstrating the agility in that one, not the owners. Bolton Fairgrounds, Rt 117, Exit 27 off Rt 495, Lancaster, MA. |
Turners Falls Block Party | Northern Mass
Sat 8/13 |
There are unspecified activities at this festival, which perhaps include the lantern parade they had last year. Turners Falls, MA. |
1774 First Resistance Re-enactment | Western Mass
Sat 8/13 |
Lexington has a re-enactment that is the first battle of the American Revolutionary War. Perhaps this event, part of Great Barrington’s 250th Anniversary, commemorates the first “resistance”? Like what? I guess you’ll have to attend to find out! Great Barrington, MA. |
Cardboard Boat Regatta in Greenfield | Northern Mass
Sat 8/13 |
I’ve never seen a cardboard boat race, but since cardboard tends to seep water, I would guess they have a short half-life! Greenfield Swim Area, Greenfield, MA. |
Lowell Quilt Festival | Northern Mass
Thu 8/11 |
This is 2nd largest annual quilt festival in the Boston area. Be open-minded! I went to a quilt show once and it was actually fantastic, the quilts are really works of art, not grandma checkerboards. Lowell, MA. |
Rehoboth Agricultural Fair | Southeast Mass
Thu 8/11 – Sun 8/14 |
If you’re in the area, check out this agricultural fair in Rehoboth, my hometown. I guess I was wrong to think of Rehoboth as totally desolate, because I went last year and it was great! They have a petting zoo, live stock exhibits, tractor pulls, horse show, carnival rides, fireworks on Saturday, and a demolition derby on Sunday! Almeida Road, Rehoboth, MA. |
Anniversary of Johnny’s List (2005) | Boston Metro
Fri 8/12 |
Johnny’s List is now 6 years old, without missing a week! That is 312 issues of weird, wonderful, and often free New Englandy event goodness. Please email me at johnny@eventsINSIDER.com and I’ll send you my Summer 2011 Guide as a thank you for telling your friends through the web page at http://eventsINSIDER.com/s/. The guide has 720 permanent destinations like museums and zoos that I don’t mention in the blog, which is more events-oriented. Everywhere, New England. |
Rehoboth Antiquarian Society Clambake | Southeast Mass
Sun 8/14 |
While you’re there, chow down at this annual celebration of the antiquarian society, also in Rehoboth, run by the local museum. It’s New Englandy goodness. Goff Hall, Rehoboth, MA.508-252-3031. |
Summer Clambake | Metro West
Thu 8/11 |
Here’s a clambake that’s closer to Boston…. Longfellow’s Wayside Inn, 72 Wayside Inn Road, Sudbury, MA.978-443-1776. |
Winnekenni Castle Chowderfest | North Shore
Sun 8/14 |
And a chowder festival that’s farther, but takes place at a “castle”!! Winnekenni Castle, Haverhill, MA. |
Jimmy Fund Fantasy Day at Fenway | Boston Metro
Sat 8/13 |
This fundraiser to support cancer research drew 3,000 people last year. As well as baseball that everyone can join in, they’ll have tours and unspecified “activities”. (It’s bound to be good when the activities aren’t described.). Fenway Park, Boston, MA. |
South Boston Italian Pride Night | Boston Metro
Thu 8/11 |
If you’re proud to be Italian, or simply want to revel with those who are, this festival goes completely undescribed and seems to have no website. It’s like they aren’t even trying to attract attendees. Ah well, it’s one of those hyper-local festivals that people hear about from their neighbors and don’t expect anyone outside their community to come to, I suppose. 6pm. Medal of Honor Park, 775 E 1st St, South Boston, MA.617-635-3911. |
Wakefield Italian Festival | North Shore
Sat 8/13 |
This one says they’ll divide the town up into the 20 regions of Italy. Is that even possible? It sounds wonderfully complicated and interesting! Domani sia una parte di esso (come be a part of it). Main and Albion Streets, Wakefield, MA.(603) 490-8050. |
Melrose Summer Celebration | Boston Metro
Fri 8/12 |
A lot of towns have an annual “town day” and this is one of them. Do we care? Well, they’ll have unspecified “games”, the ubiquitous face painting, and a moon bounce that presumably adults can’t go into. They also promise ‘surprises’. Hmm. 11am-1pm. Melrose, MA.(781) 662-9511. |
Essex Street Fair | North Shore
Sat 8/13 – Sun 8/14 |
This is just an excuse to visit Salem before Halloween season. And there are tons of other nearby events as part of Salem’s Heritage Days. Essex Street, Salem, MA. |
Phillips House Car Meet | North Shore
Sun 8/14 |
While you’re there, check out the ancient Pierce-Arrows, Model A Ford, and five carriages on display at this car show. “Family games” and jazz music. 12-3pm. Free. Salem, MA.978-744-0440. |
Rockport Acoustic Music Festival | North Shore
Sun 8/14 |
I’m including this just as an example of the live outdoor music that you can find all over New England. See my big list below where I track 230 outdoor summer music series! 12-6pm. Rockport, MA. |
Children’s Day & Watermelon Eating Contest | New Hampshire
Sat 8/13 |
This kids celebration comes with a watermelon eating contest! Awesome! Nashua, NH. |
Children’s Festival & Talent Competition | New Hampshire
Mon 8/15 – Fri 8/19 |
This childrens festival is conveniently right when most of us are working, Monday to Friday, and includes a giant costume competition. Well, it’s free. Hampton Beach, Hampton Beach, NH. |
Prescott Park Rhythm & Roots Fest | New Hampshire
Sun 8/14 |
Heading up to Water Country for the day, the big water park? Stop by this music festival, too. 1-5pm. Portsmouth, NH. |
Springfield Caribbean Week | Springfield
Fri 8/12 – Sat 8/20 |
The best part of this Caribbean week is the 2nd weekend, when there’s a talent show and a parade. Springfield, MA. |
Bridge of Flowers 10K Run & Charity Walk | Western Mass
Sat 8/13 |
I’ve just visited the “Bridge of Flowers”, an old trolley bridge that they’ve converted into a garden, and it’s a wonderful setting and a quaint New Englandy town. This race may be just your excuse to give it a visit, especially if you are doing other things in Western Massachusetts. Shelburne Falls, MA. |
Charlemont Reggae Fest | Western Mass
Sat 8/13 |
For example, you might practice your Jamaican accent at this reggae festival. Hoot, mon! Charlemont, MA. |
Neighborhood Fun Days in Fall River | Southeast Mass
Tue 8/16 |
Fall River is having a festival with the usual moonbounce and unspecified games, music, and arts & crafts. 4-7pm. Fall River, MA. |
Moonlight Paddle in Rhode Island | Rhode Island
Sat 8/13 |
In Rhode Island, this kayak center has regular programs and tours, one of which is this moonlight paddle. Sounds lovely! Wickford, RI. |
Free Fun Fridays: JFK Library & Museum | Boston Metro
Fri 8/12 |
If you haven’t been, the John F Kennedy Museum has some very engaging permanent exhibits — it’s very accessible even for those with only a passing interest in the former US President. Of course, they have regular lectures to draw you in, but this free day is nice too. JFK Library & Museum, Columbia Point, Boston, MA.617-514-1600. |
Boston Restaurant Week – Summer | Boston Metro
Sun 8/14 – Fri 8/19 |
Get cheap eats at the fanciest restaurants. A marketing ploy, a tourist event, what’s the difference? Pay $33 and say, What, this is your DISCOUNTED dinner? Where da IHOP at, yo? Various, Boston, MA. |
BANG BANG Boston Premier | Boston Metro
Thu 8/11 |
BANG BANG is a new film about a troubled teen trying to get out of gang life. It won Best First Feature at the Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival and the director will come do a Q&A and give away posters and t-shirts. Come out to support independent film. Kendall Square Theatre, Cambridge, MA. |
Provincetown Jazz Festival | Cape Cod
Fri 8/12 – Mon 8/15 |
Whether you have an interest in jazz or not, perhaps this will inspire you to check out Cape Cod during CARNIVAL TIME! Provincetown, MA. |
Pucker Up! Pickle Making for Kids and Families | Boston Metro
Sat 8/13 |
Oh my god! It’s a pickle workshop! Bring vegetables to pickle and pickle away! 10am-12pm. Registration required. City Natives, 30 Edgewater Drive, Mattapan, MA. |
Free Clinic: How to Fix a Flat Bicycle Tire | Boston Metro
Thu 8/11 |
This bicycle shop epitomizes the liberal tradition of raging against injustice (bombs) by doing something irrelevant (bicycles). But this class on changing your tires is free, and at least they won’t bring giant puppets! Now that’s a good deed! 8pm. Bikes Bombs Not Bombs, 18 Bartlett Sq., Jamaica Plain, MA. |
All’s Well That Ends Well – Outdoor Theatre: Our Review | Boston Metro
Wed 7/27 – Sun 8/14 |
This is the last week to catch the summer outdoor theatre show on Boston Common. Read ahead for our review and see below for dozens more outdoor theatre series in New England. Boston, MA. |
Improv on the Bricks | North Shore
Sat 8/13 – Sun 8/14 |
Salem Theatre Company holds an improv comedy show that’s unique for being outdoors. And free. Unfortunately, I don’t know anything more about it. 3:30pm each day. Derby Square on the Front Street side of Old Town Hall, Salem, MA.978-590-3276. |
U.S. Victory Canteen- An USO inspired 1940’s musical review | Southeast Mass
Fri 8/12 – Sat 8/13 |
Wow! This is creative. They are going to re-enact, so to speak, a USO Tour, you know, the people who entertained the troops during World War II. And it takes place right next to the largest naval exhibit in the world, which features not only an entire battleship but submarines and a lot more. I’ve been many times and it’s a must-see combination of historical education and fun exploration. Fall River, MA. |
Central New England Karate Championships | Worcester
Sun 8/14 |
Hmm, karate championships. This’ll be cool, right? DCU Center, Worcester, MA. |
Providence Roller Derby | Rhode Island
Sat 8/13 |
I haven’t seen a roller derby, so I don’t have a sense for whether it’s as sexy and cool as they make it out to be. It’s like women wrestling in a mud pit, without the mud pit. And they’re on roller skates. 2 Kennedy Plaza, Providence, RI. |
Woody Guthrie Appreciation Concert | Metro West
Sun 8/14 |
If you need an excuse to visit the Old Manse, a historic home, this Woodie Guthrie tribute may be the trick! And it’s free. 2-4pm. The Old Manse, 269 Monument Street, Concord, MA. |
Northern Outdoors – Whitewater Rafting – Our Review | Maine
Sat 8/13 |
I’ve just returned from a week in Maine, and here are some reviews of local atractions! Northern Outdoors was the first and is possibly the best whitewater rafting company in Maine, with a base camp that includes a microbrewery, a hot tub, a swimming pool, and a ton of other amenities. Click here for my review! The Forks, ME. |
Owls Head Transportation Museum | Maine
Sat 1/1 – Sat 12/31 |
Did you know that there’s an automobile museum in Brookline? This one in Midcoast Maine adds aircraft! I’ve just attended their annual air and car show, and don’t worry, I’ll keep you abreast of their many upcoming events. Their collection is large and very impressive, and curated in a way that makes it very accessible. You will learn a lot! Owls Head Transportation Museum, Owls Head, ME. |
Maine Botanical Gardens | Maine
Wed 6/1 – Sat 10/1 |
Of course I love the Arnold Arboretum, the location near Franklin Park in Boston that’s run by Harvard and is dotted with trees and plants from all over the world. But this location in Midcoast Maine adds luxuriously crafted ponds, stone gardens, fountains, a waterfall, walking paths, and even two “fairy house villages” in their 250 acres. It’s about 10 times bigger and more wonderful than I had expect in this relatively remote location. Boothbay, ME. |
Red Cloak Haunted History Tours | Maine
Fri 7/1 – Mon 10/31 |
Perhaps you’ve heard of the ghost story tours that are so popular in Boston and Salem. Well, you’ll find such things in Maine, too! These evening walking tours lead you through quaint New Englandy towns and you’ll learn a lot about real history in a fun way, as well as being tickled by the possibility of ghost flitting about. The walk was an easy one and we weren’t led to some gift shop at the end. I’m always a bit uneasy about those who “believe” but the tours aren’t delivered that way, they are just for fun and especially great for families. Various, Camden, ME. |
Skowhegan State Fair | Maine
Thu 8/11 – Sat 8/20 |
Why travel up to Fiesta Shows when they have their traveling carnival coming again and again to an area near you? Skowhegan, ME. |
Dance New England – Dance Camp | Maine
Fri 8/12 – Tue 8/23 |
Enjoy dancing? Want to experience 11 days of heat with no meat? Here’s a retreat, a feat for your feet that can’t be beat! P.S. This is your graphic?? Get a new logo, people! Omni Camp, Poland Springs, ME. |
On to Richmond – Civil War Event | Connecticut
Sat 8/13 – Sun 8/14 |
This is some sort of Civil War re-enactment. I wish I had more details. Woodbury, CT. |
Tweed River Festival | Vermont
Fri 8/12 – Sun 8/14 |
This is yet another campground all-weekend festival. Why not? Stockbridge, VT. |
Americana Days, Anniversary of the Battle of Bennington | Vermont
Sat 8/13 – Sun 8/14 |
Cannons, Soldiers and Ceremonies at this nearby event. Bennington, VT. |
Guilford, VT – 250th Anniversary Parade | Vermont
Sat 8/13 |
Happy birthday, Guilford, Vermont. They’ll have a parade, fireworks, hot air balloon rides, and a lot more. Guilford, VT. |
Mohegan Storytelling & Music Festival | New York
Sat 8/13 |
Professional storytellers do a routine that is sort of a one-person theatre show. I’ve seen it and it’s not just for kids! 99 Baron de Hirsch Rd, Crompond, NY. |
Rock, Rattle, & Drum Pow Wow & Spirit on the Mountain Music Festival | New York
Sat 8/13 – Sun 8/14 |
This festival seems to be a serious music event, as well as a Native American pow wow, and well worth a visit. Considering camping over that weekend. Don’t be afraid — it’s only 20 minutes over the state border into New York. Rt. 22 & Rt. 43, Stephentown, NY.413-464-0919. |
