Japanese Culture Day @ Longfellow Historical Site | 8/30 | Boston Metro
There are two asian festivals this week, too. I was just at the Longfellow House, and it’s definitely worth the trip! Did you know that George Washington used it as his headquarters? Pawtucket Arts Fest & Dragonboat Races | 8/29 – 8/30 | Rhode Island
Even better, visit Rhode Island for asian dance, crafts, martial arts, and dragonboat races all day. It’s also part of the “Pawtucket Arts Festival”, which is really just an umbrella event covering a lot of diverse things, but plenty more is happening in town that day, including French culture, a film festival, and a walking tour. Races 8/29 8am-5pm. Rest of ‘festival’ goes to 9/13. School Street Pier, School St., Pawtucket, RI.401-724-2200. more |

North Country Moose Festival | 8/28 – 8/30 | New Hampshire
Looking for an excuse to head up to the hills of New Hampshire? They’re a festival with a car show, helicopter rides, the usual street crafts vendors & food & live music, and moose tours!! I went on one once and we saw meeses!!! How exciting! Main Street, Colebrook, NH. more |

Boston Comedy Festival | 8/29 – 9/5 | Boston Metro
The Boston Comedy Festival isn’t exactly weird but it was SO much fun the year I went. Highly recommended! The really big deal is finals night, the last night of the week. Various downtown venues, Boston, MA. more |
Plymouth Waterfront Festival | 8/29 – 8/30 | South Shore
I’ve also been to this one. At first I was ready to assume it would be small & uninteresting. But it’s actually rather large with a great diversity of activities including the Mayflower ship replica. A great excuse to visit Plimoth Plantation and stop by. 11am-5pm. Plymouth, MA. more |

The MFA is free again. (Thanks!). Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, MA. more |
Welcome Students Block Party | 9/2 – 9/3 | Boston Metro
This one I’m listing on the off chance they really will have a “block party”, where a street is closed off and there’s dancing. But… from the event description it appears to be simply a set of coupons to local businesses. Sweet but not arty. 2-8pm. Harvard Square, Cambridge, MA. more |
Recurring Events |
Davis Farmland Corn Maze | 8/6 – 10/31 | Worcester
It’s very important that you check out my favorite (and the biggest and best) corn maze in New England, at Davis Farmland! This year they’ve gone all out with an Indiana Jones theme. It’s across the street from their petting zoo, apple-picking orchard, water spray park, and hay rides (all of which is only for adults who have kids along, boo hoo). 145 Redstone Hill, Sterling, MA.978-422-8888. more |
Coppal House Farm Corn Maze ( & Night Maze ) | 8/29 – 10/31 | New Hampshire
This corn maze is opening this weekend, too! 118 North River Road, Lee, NH.603-659-3572. more |
Kimball Farm Corn Maze | 8/29 – 11/8 | Northern Mass
Another corn maze. I’ve been to this one. It’s smaller, but worth the trip and very creative with clues in the maze! Kimball Farm Corn Maze, 780 East Broadway, Haverhill, MA.978 521-3990. more |
Performance |
Cirque du Soleil | 8/26 – 8/30 | Boston Metro
I just saw the show yesterday and can highly recommend you go. These are the people who clown around but also do acrobatics in the air on long silk strands or trampolines. A lot of standard circus fare but plenty of over-the-top acts too, all delivered with a classy, theatrical, foreign bent to the staging & costumes. Bayside Expo Center, Boston, MA.800-678-5440. more |

… And this is the active one! Bangor, ME. more |
Champlain Valley Fair | 8/29 – 9/7 | Vermont
This one’s clearly the heartland music event of the week, though. Includes a demolition derby, a tractor pull, and a ton of famous names. Champlain Valley Exposition, 105 Pearl St., Essex Junction, VT.802-878-5545. more |
Maryland Renaissance Festival @ Silver Springs | 8/29 – 10/25 | Maryland
