July 12-19, 2011: Lantern, Sand Sculpting, Scottish, African, Balloon Fests, ArtBeat, Civil War, Japanese Black Ships, a Giant Forest of Glass at the MFA, and 300 Outdoor Music, Movie, Theatre Series
Last week I visited the Chihuly exhibit at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. I’m generally uncomfortable with arts museums, because I rarely “get” what is going on, and suspect often that there is nothing! But the Chihuly exhibit is a rare exception, sort of the “Harvard Glass Flower Exhibit” blown up 10 feet tall for the 21st century, with exhibits you can walk through like a giant forest! I hope you are having an awesome week. Now get out there and do something fun!

The Week in Weird | ||||
Thu 7/14Boston MetroForest Hills Lantern Festival |

The event of the week is the Forest Hills Lantern Festival. It’s simply amazing, one of my favorite events of the year. ||||
Sat 7/16Boston MetroAfrican Festival of Boston |
Sure, they’ll have live music and the ubiquitous vendors and food. But the parade at 10am from Boston Common is the real draw to this festival, and African-themed fests are rare. 9am-9pm. Boston City Hall Plaza, Boston, MA.857-249-3831. more |

What’s better than cars? Airplanes! This celebration takes place at Yirrell Beach, which is right next to Logan Airport. You can see planes landing about 100 feet off the ground, no exaggeration! For this reason it’s a lovely beach to visit at night, too. There’s a swim competition, music, food, games like hula hoops, and “Beach Sumo Wrestling”. Rain date next day. 10am-3pm. Yirrell Beach, Shirley Street, Winthrop, MA.617-846-8243. more |

Fri 7/15Boston MetroBastille Day Party & Dance in Boston |
They’re blocking off Marlborough Street between Berkeley and Clarendon from 6-11 PM for a huge dance party. I went last year and because they wanted to serve alcohol, it’s like you’re trying to have a party in a giant crowded cage! And it’s not free. I was really disappointed in this event, which comes with live music but not much else, even though it’s hosted by the French Consulate. Sun 4/10 – Sun 8/7Boston MetroChihuly: Glass Sculpture at the Museum of Fine Arts |
The MFA is hosting an entire FOREST of giant glass flowers, glass sea creatures, and other oddities. They are above you, they are below you, you walk through them and around them, all without any glass cases to get in the way of the experience. I love sculpture and this is the next big thing, trust me. The scale of the projects, the translucent colors, are magical and uplifting, and you really must go check it out. I’m not much normally for some of the MFA’s permanent exhibits, which I find hard to understand, but this one is an accessible gem that even if you don’t go to many museums, you will love. Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, MA. more |
